Common questions

Why do people see a Nutritionist?

They want to feel less uptight with their partner & kids, happier with their body, less stressed, feel less pain, sleep better, perform & compete better, be more energetic, try new things, get their kids health sorted, have a sharper mind, take back control, feel more on top of life…

Quite simply, people come to see me when they’ve had enough of not feeling great. Or, they want to improve their sport & mental performance.

The role of Nutritional Medicine is all about ACTIVATING WELLNESS. It’s getting to the root cause of why you don’t feel great, or why you’re not performing well enough – not just covering up symptoms. Next, it’s onto prescribing foods, living herbs, spices, professional supplements & lifestyle changes to enable your body to refocus, rebalance & heal.

Seeing a nutritionist makes your life easier & helps you get results faster.

It takes away the guesswork & confusion.

Working with me means you’ll get results through;

  1. Targeted one-on-one food coaching, menu plans & recipes.
  2. A tailored Wellness Activation Plan with evidence-based recommendations based on your goals, a full nutrition & health assessment, any functional test results, experience and the latest research available.
  3. Practitioner-only supplements (if required), with therapeutic doses prescribed for your individual needs.
  4. Ongoing support, direction & assessment.

Does the food I eat really make that much difference?

Every part of your body relies on what you eat. That’s your blood cells, bones, muscles, hormones, neurotransmitters like serotonin, your heart, liver, lungs, immune system etc.

So chances are, if you don’t feel great, there’s a dysfunction somewhere in your body & how you’re eating and living needs attention.

What sorts of diseases & conditions can nutritional medicine help?

Diseases & conditions are signs of dysfunction within the body. The drivers behind these dysfunctions will be a combination of factors such as genetics, environment,  nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, immune dysregulation, food sensitivities & poor digestive health.

Many of these lifestyle drivers of disease can be addressed through changing how you EAT, THINK & LIVE = WELLNESS = NUTRITIONAL MEDICINE.

I have seen great results across so many conditions including Hashimotos Thyroiditis, Depression, Stress, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Restless Leg Syndrome, IBS, Liver Disease, Allergies, Asthma & Obesity.

Addressing the underlying root causes provides relief from symptoms like bloating, low energy, erratic moods, constipation/diarrhea, weight issues, skin issues, sugar cravings, body aches, reflux, burping & poor sleeping patterns.

I’ve always eaten the same way. Why don’t I feel so great anymore?

Across all the stages of our lifespan, our bodies are constantly changing. So too are our needs.

By the time we hit our 30s & 40s, we often don’t feel quite how we used to BUT that doesn’t mean that’s as good as it gets, or that it’s normal. We just need to cater for these adjustments.

Our bodies are very clever at giving clues that things aren’t quite right. The longer we ignore these clues, the more dis-ease it can create.

Your symptoms (or clues) may include bloating, low energy, erratic moods, poor performance, constipation/diarrhea, weight issues, skin issues, sugar cravings, body aches, reflux, burping & poor sleeping patterns.

It’s your body’s way of letting you know it needs some attention & change. Now.

What about treating kids?

I love helping kids. As a mum myself, I know how hard it is when they aren’t feeling great.

Fussy eaters? I understand how daunting the prospect of introducing diet changes is. That’s why it’s good to work as a team. I can help with meal inspiration, recipes, behavioural tips, preferred brands & more.

“Jane, we have come a long way in a week! Today’s lunch box included a sandwich on wholemeal bread that contained a green thing called lettuce, yoghurt with strawberries and chia seeds, banana. cherry tomatoes and vita weats with vegemite as the treat! Thank you so much for all your realistic help.” Mum of a client age 9

How important is nutrition for higher sports performance?

“There is universal scientific consensus that diet affects performance.” Anita Bean

A well-planned nutritional strategy is a critical component to achieving your best sporting performance. It should sit equal in priority alongside your training program, natural ability, mental preparation & equipment.

The wrong nutrition can ruin your performance.

But the right diet will not only optimise your performance, strength & energy levels, but promote efficient recovery & reduce the risk of illness.

What happens during a nutrition consult?

ACTIVATING WELLNESS or HIGH SPORTS PERFORMANCE starts with your initial consult. This usually takes around 45-60 minutes. It’s like a health & wellness investigation to help uncover what’s really happening on the inside & find out what’s holding you back.

The aim of the initial consult is:

  1. To understand your priorities & goals for wellness OR performance (eg. better sleep, more energy, improved recovery, better enduarance etc).
  2. To explore all aspects of your health, wellbeing & diet, to help uncover the key barriers & areas that need addressing.

We’ll have a thorough discussion about your health history, current symptoms, diet, training/exercise, relaxation practices, sleep habits etc.

A range of functional tests (such as health questionnaires, blood/stool/ urine testing, body composition anaylsis, pH levels etc), are also used as required. These not only provide valuable insights, but establish important benchmarks for measuring results too.

All the information is analysed & researched, to develop your Wellness Activation Plan OR High Performance Plan. Presented & discussed at your follow-up appointment.
